Abstract

Since 2014, the Indian government has vigorously attracted foreign investment in manufacturing through industrial policies such as "Make in India," with the consumer electronics sector, particularly smartphones, emerging as one of the fastest-growing industries. As one of the earliest and most successful entrants into the Indian market, Chinese consumer electronics brands have achieved rapid growth and local production. Leading companies have captured significant market share by establishing local assembly through contract manufacturers, increasing component procurement within India, and expanding omnichannel retail presence. However, fluctuations in Sino-Indian relations, increasingly stringent regulatory policies, and shifts in the local socio-political environment have exposed these companies to multifaceted risks, including asset freezes, tax audits, and nationalist sentiment, even as they benefit from initial policy incentives. This paper employs analytical frameworks such as the PEST model, SWOT analysis, and Porter's Five Forces to systematically examine the macro-environment, internal capabilities, and industry competition for consumer electronics companies operating in India. It outlines the typical localization pathway for supply chains and identifies the primary risks encountered. Based on this analysis, the study proposes strategic countermeasures and recommendations for consumer electronics firms to deepen localization and enhance risk management in the Indian market. The research concludes that while companies have gained market advantage through local manufacturing and competitive pricing, sustainable success requires further optimization in areas such as compliance governance, local talent development, and the implementation of diversified "China + 1" supply chain strategies.
