Abstract

Behavioral economics has transformed the study of decision making by integrating psychological insights into economic analysis, revealing systematic deviations from rational choice assumptions. This review examines the development and application of behavioral economics frameworks, grounded in prospect theory, nudge theory, and dual-process models of cognition. Recognition of cognitive biases and contextual influences has driven transformations from neoclassical rationality assumptions to bounded rationality frameworks, from isolated individual analysis to socially embedded decision processes, and from descriptive behavioral mapping to prescriptive choice architecture interventions. Specific mechanisms—including default rules, framing effects, social norms, and commitment devices—have been applied across domains to improve outcomes in savings, health, consumption, and public policy. Applications demonstrate measurable improvements in decision quality while raising questions about autonomy, manipulation, and long-term effectiveness. Challenges of cultural variation, ethical boundaries, and the scalability of interventions persist. Prospects center on personalized behavioral design, integration with digital platforms, and governance frameworks that balance effectiveness with respect for individual agency. The analysis concludes that behavioral economics provides both diagnostic tools for understanding decision failures and practical instruments for improving outcomes, provided interventions are designed transparently and evaluated rigorously.
